Nihondaira to Kunozan Toshogu Ropeway Trail

This route combines an easy walking loop around the Nihondaira plateau with a ropeway descent to Kunozan Toshogu shrine, above Shimizu in Shizuoka City. The Nihondaira side is reached by the Shimizu Sightseeing Loop Bus from JR Shimizu Station to the Nihondaira Ropeway stop, or by Shizutetsu bus from JR Shizuoka Station; the plateau trailhead sits beside the Nihondaira Yume Terrace observation building. The walking portion covers about 2km on paved and gravel paths looping through tea terraces and pine groves at roughly 307m elevation, taking 1-1.5 hours at an easy pace with no significant climbing. From the plateau, a 1km aerial ropeway descends 264m to Kunozan Toshogu, one of the oldest Tokugawa shrines in Japan and the mausoleum of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu; the ropeway is the only practical link between the two points, since the alternative is a steep staircase of over 1,000 steps directly up from the shrine's base near the coast. The Yume Terrace itself is the trail's key landmark, offering panoramic views over Suruga Bay, the tea terraces, and Mount Fuji on clear days, particularly at sunrise or in winter when the air is driest. The shrine complex at the ropeway's base includes vermilion-lacquered halls and a small museum, with cafes and rest areas near both the upper and lower ropeway stations. There is no natural water source or mountain hut along the plateau paths, but vending machines and shops cluster at the Yume Terrace and shrine precinct, so the route suits a relaxed half-day outing rather than a wilderness hike.
