Lake Tanuki Loop Trail

The Lake Tanuki Loop Trail circles Tanukiko, a reservoir lake in the Asagiri Highlands near Fujinomiya, Shizuoka, best known as a foreground for reflected views of Mount Fuji. Access is by Fujikyu bus from JR Fujinomiya Station toward Asagiri Kogen to the Tanukiko-iriguchi stop, followed by a 15-minute walk to the lakeshore; a car is more practical for the pre-dawn starts many photographers make, since bus service does not run early enough for sunrise. The full lakeshore loop covers about 4.5km on a flat gravel and dirt path at roughly 650m elevation with negligible climbing, taking about 1.5 hours at an easy walking pace. The path stays close to the water's edge for most of its length, passing campgrounds, fishing spots, and a handful of clearings that serve as the lake's best photography points. The trail's main draw is the 'Diamond Fuji' phenomenon, when the sunrise or sunset aligns directly with Mount Fuji's summit as seen across the lake, visible within about a week either side of April 20 and August 20 each year; crowds of photographers gather at the northern shore clearings on those mornings. Outside those windows, the calm lake still offers reliable reflection shots of Fuji on still mornings. There are no mountain huts along the loop, but a campground with basic facilities and a small visitor center sit near the trailhead. The path has no technical difficulty and no reliable turn-around concerns, since it can be shortened at any point by cutting back to the access road that runs parallel to part of the shoreline.
