Lake Biwa Otsu Lakeside Promenade Walk

The Otsu lakeside promenade walk begins near JR Otsu Station or Keihan Otsu-Kyo Station, a 5–10 minute walk to Nagisa Park on the Lake Biwa waterfront in Shiga; no permit or entry fee applies. The route follows a paved, flat promenade for about 6 kilometers one way from Otsu Port to the pine grove at Karasaki, with essentially no elevation change, making it accessible to a wide range of walkers. The surface is paved path and boardwalk sections through Nagisa Park, fully exposed to sun along most of the lakefront with occasional shade from planted trees and the pines near Karasaki. Landmarks along the route include the Otsu Port marina and its seasonal flower displays, the Biwako Hall performance venue, public sculpture installations in Nagisa Park, and the famous Karasaki Pine (Karasaki no Matsu) at Gonoo Shrine, a designated scenic tree with a centuries-old lineage. Walkers with less time can turn back at the Biwako Hall area, roughly the halfway point, and still take in the core lakefront scenery. There are public restrooms and vending machines at several points along Nagisa Park, and cafés near Otsu Port, but facilities thin out toward the Karasaki end, so carrying water is advisable for the full one-way distance. There is no shelter or hut along the route, though the walk stays close to residential areas and roads for most of its length, making it easy to detour to nearby shops if weather turns. Bicycles share sections of the path, so pedestrians should stay alert near intersections with the cycling lane. Cherry blossoms line parts of the promenade in late March to early April, and the flat, well-maintained path makes the walk enjoyable in most seasons, including light winter conditions.
