Chikubushima Pilgrim Steps

Chikubushima Pilgrim Steps are reached by passenger boat from Nagahama Port in Shiga, about 30 minutes each way (¥3,200/$20.16 round trip), or from Omi-Imazu Port, about 40 minutes; no hiking permit is needed, but boat schedules govern how much time is available on the island. From the island's small boat landing, a steep flight of 165 stone steps climbs about 40 meters over a short 400-meter round trip to the Hogon-ji Temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine complex at the top. The steps are stone and can be uneven and slick after rain, with handrails along much of the climb; the route is shaded in places by surrounding trees but exposed to direct sun near the summit shrine terrace. Because the island is small and heavily developed with religious buildings, there is no meaningful shade-versus-exposure tradeoff to plan around, and the entire route can be walked in well under an hour. Key landmarks include the entrance torii near the boat landing, the mid-climb Kannon-do hall, and the Tsukubusuma Shrine's ornately carved Karamon gate, a National Treasure, near the top of the steps. There is no realistic turn-around point partway up, since the steps are the entire route to the temple complex; visitors short on stamina can rest at several landings built into the stairway. There are restrooms and a small shop near the boat landing, but no water fountains partway up the steps, so a small bottle of water is worth carrying despite the short distance. There is no shelter beyond the temple buildings themselves, and because access depends entirely on the boat schedule, visitors should confirm return departure times before climbing, as missing the last boat means an overnight stay on the mainland side is required.
