Yobuko Coastal Area

The Yobuko Coastal Area covers a series of small rocky coves and inlets around the fishing port of Yobuko, in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, rather than a single open sand beach. The shoreline here is rocky rather than sandy, with clear water in the sheltered coves that suits snorkelling and tide-pool exploring more than lap swimming or sunbathing on open sand. The coves are compact and irregular in shape, tucked among the rocks of the small peninsula, and are more exposed to wind and current where they open toward the Genkai Sea, so conditions vary from cove to cove. The overall atmosphere is a working fishing village rather than a resort beach: there is no beach-bar or party scene, and swimming infrastructure such as lifeguards or roped-off areas is not part of the setup. The area's main draw beyond the water is the adjoining Yobuko Morning Market, open daily from 7:30 a.m. to noon, where visitors can find fresh seafood, including the squid Yobuko is known for. The Kabushima Bridge lookout point nearby offers coastal views across the strait to Kabushima island. Facilities are basic: public restrooms are available at the bus terminal, and parking near the port is limited, particularly on market mornings. Most visitors arrive by Showa Bus from the Karatsu Bus Center, a roughly 30-minute ride, after taking the JR Karatsu Line to Karatsu Station from Saga. From the bus stop, the small coves and rocky swimming spots are within walking distance.
