Higashihama Beach (Eastern Beach)

Higashihama Beach, also known as Eastern Beach, sits on the Genkai Sea coast in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, a short walk from Higashi-Karatsu Station. The beach is composed of fine, pale sand that shelves gently into calm, shallow water, giving it a clear, light-turquoise cast on sunny days rather than the deeper blue of more exposed coastlines. It runs for a few hundred meters along a sheltered stretch of Karatsu Bay, its shape a shallow arc rather than an open straight shoreline, which cuts down on surf and wind chop even when the open Genkai Sea beyond is choppier. The gentle water and roped-off swimming zone, staffed during the July–August season, make Higashihama one of the more family-oriented beaches in the Karatsu area rather than a surf or party destination; there is little in the way of beach-bar nightlife. Basic amenities are seasonal: changing rooms and cold-water showers operate from July through August, when lifeguards also patrol the swimming area, but outside that window facilities are minimal and unstaffed. Sun loungers and food concessions are not a fixture of the beach itself, though convenience stores and small eateries are reachable on the walk back toward Higashi-Karatsu Station. Parking is available nearby for those arriving by car, and the beach's proximity to the train station makes it one of the more transit-accessible beaches on this stretch of coast. Across the bay, the beach offers views toward Karatsu Castle, adding a scenic backdrop to swimming and photography. Visitors coming outside the official swimming season should be aware that the roped safety area and lifeguard coverage are not in place, so caution is warranted for anyone entering the water.
