Hamasaki Beach

Hamasaki Beach lies at the mouth of the Matsuura River in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, backed by a belt of pine trees that separates the sand from the town behind it. The beach itself is white sand, fine underfoot, with water that stays relatively clear near the shore though it can carry some river sediment close to the Matsuura mouth after rain. The shoreline is a modest, sheltered stretch rather than a long open beach, and its position at the river mouth keeps wave action gentle and shallow, well suited to wading and casual swimming rather than surfing. Facilities are modest and seasonal — food stalls appear along the beach approach during the peak summer weeks, but outside that window there is little in the way of food or rental services on site, and no dedicated lifeguard tower is mentioned for the beach. Parking is available near the beach, making it accessible by car, and it is also reachable on foot or by short taxi from Karatsu Station, about a 15-minute walk along the river mouth. The pine groves behind the sand provide some shade and a windbreak, useful on hot summer afternoons, and views open out across the Matsuura River mouth toward Karatsu Bay. Visitors seeking a quieter alternative to the busier Karatsu beaches, without the crowds of Nishinohama, may find Hamasaki's low-key character appealing, though it lacks the organized swimming safety infrastructure of the more developed beaches nearby.
