Tsuruhashi Korean Town

Tsuruhashi, in Ikuno Ward, is Japan's largest Korean community district, its roots tracing to Korean migrants who settled in the area in the early 20th century and built the district's identity around trade and food. The neighborhood centers on a dense, labyrinthine covered market of narrow lanes packed with stalls selling Korean groceries, kimchi in dozens of varieties, cosmetics, traditional hanbok clothing, and imported goods hard to find elsewhere in Osaka. Surrounding the market, the streets are lined with yakiniku (Korean barbecue) restaurants, many family-run for multiple generations, along with stalls selling Korean street snacks such as hotteok and tteokbokki. The area is compact enough to explore fully in two to three hours, including a meal. Lunchtime is the liveliest period, when yakiniku restaurants fill with local diners and market stalls are fully stocked, while the narrow lanes can become quite congested during that window; a mid-morning visit offers easier movement through the market before the lunch rush.
