Osaka Castle (Osaka-jo)

Osaka Castle is the most recognizable landmark in Osaka, Japan, its green-and-gold tower rising above massive stone ramparts in Chuo Ward. Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the original fortress in 1583 to project his power after unifying Japan; the current concrete reconstruction dates to 1931 and was renovated again in 1997. Visitors ride an elevator to the upper floors, where an interior museum traces the castle's role in the Siege of Osaka and the Toyotomi and Tokugawa clans through armor, screen paintings, and a scale diorama, before reaching an observation deck on the eighth floor with views over Osaka Castle Park and the surrounding moats. Outside, the park's stone walls, turrets, and moat walking paths reward an hour of wandering on their own, and the Nishinomaru Garden offers a classic framed view of the tower with cherry trees in the foreground. A full visit, museum and grounds included, takes two to three hours; arriving soon after the 9:00 AM opening avoids the tour-bus crowds that build by midday. Photographers get the cleanest shots of the tower from across the inner moat near the Gokoku Shrine approach, or from the park's eastern lawn at sunset. Late March through early April draws the heaviest crowds, when roughly 3,000 cherry trees bloom around the moats and evening illumination events light the tower after dark.
