Yumeji Art Museum

The Yumeji Art Museum sits beside Korakuen Garden along the Asahi River and is devoted to Takehisa Yumeji, an Okayama-born painter, poet and graphic designer whose romantic depictions of women became a defining image of early 20th-century Taisho-era popular culture. The collection includes Yumeji's paintings, book illustrations, kimono and textile designs, and ephemera such as postcards and sheet music covers, tracing his career from magazine illustrator to a figure whose style influenced Japanese graphic design more broadly. The main gallery building, along with a separate annex nearby, rotates works from the permanent collection alongside occasional themed exhibitions. A visit through the main galleries takes about an hour; visitors adding the annex should allow a little more time. The museum's riverside setting along the Asahi, with Korakuen Garden a short walk away, makes it a natural add-on for an afternoon that also covers the garden and Okayama Castle. Because it sits slightly off the main garden-castle path, the museum is rarely crowded even when Korakuen itself is busy, and weekday afternoons in particular tend to be quiet. The museum closes on Mondays and over the New Year period, and special exhibitions occasionally require a higher admission fee than the standard rate.
