Korakuen Garden

Korakuen Garden is one of Japan's three great gardens, alongside Kenrokuen and Kairakuen, and occupies roughly 13 hectares on an island in the Asahi River directly across from Okayama Castle's black keep. Visitors wander wide lawns punctuated by ponds, tea houses, a working rice paddy, a plum orchard and a tea plantation, all arranged in the strolling-garden style that opens onto sweeping 'borrowed views' of the castle rising beyond the trees. Highlights include the Enyotei villa overlooking the central pond, the Ryuten pavilion built over a stream, and Sawa-no-ike pond with its crane enclosure. A full loop of the paths, including a detour to the hilltop viewpoint near Yuishinzan for panoramic views over the lawns and castle, takes about 1.5 to 2 hours; visitors touring quickly can see the main ponds and lawns in under an hour. Early morning, right at opening, offers the softest light for photographs of the castle framed by garden foliage and the fewest other visitors; midday on weekends and during the March cherry blossom and October-November maple seasons draws the largest crowds, particularly around the central lawn and plum orchard. Seasonal highlights include plum blossoms in February, azaleas and irises in early summer, and illuminated night viewings during select autumn evenings. The garden's flat gravel paths and open lawns make for easy walking, and its position beside the Asahi River and Okayama Castle makes it easy to combine into a half-day itinerary.
