Takahama Beach (Hirado Island)

Takahama Beach on Hirado Island is one of the more developed beach destinations in Nagasaki Prefecture, known for fine white sand and clear water that draws comparisons to beaches further south. The cove has a gentle, open shape facing the Genkai Sea, with mostly calm swimming conditions in summer though wind can pick up in shoulder months, and the sand is soft and pale rather than the coarser grit found at some of the volcanic or fishing-village beaches nearer Nagasaki city. A seasonal beach house operates in summer alongside changing rooms, giving Takahama more built-out infrastructure than beaches like Nomozaki or Kosaza, and it draws a family-oriented crowd along with some swimmers and photographers drawn to Hirado's scenic coastline and its historic ties to early European trade. The beach is a genuine day-out destination rather than a quick city stop, given its distance from central Nagasaki. Reaching Takahama involves a multi-leg journey: a JR train from Nagasaki to Sasebo (about 70 minutes, ¥2,270/$14.76), then a bus to Hirado town, followed by a local bus to Takahama itself, adding up to roughly 2.5 hours of travel each way. Because of this, most visitors combine the beach with other Hirado attractions — the castle, churches, and Dutch trading post history — rather than visiting for swimming alone. The beach house and changing facilities operate only during the summer season, so visitors traveling outside July and August should expect a quieter, less serviced beach.
