Kosaza Beach (Sasebo area)

Kosaza Beach sits near Sasebo in northern Nagasaki Prefecture, and it is best known locally as a shallow, family-friendly stretch of sand where children can wade a good distance out before the water deepens. The shoreline is sandy with a gentle slope, sheltered enough for calm conditions through most of the summer, and the water clarity is decent though not the standout turquoise of the Goto Islands beaches further offshore. A promenade runs along part of the beach, and summer-only facilities support the swimming season, but there is no year-round beach house or restaurant strip, so the amenities are modest compared to Takahama on Hirado. The overall character is quiet and residential, drawing mostly local families from the Sasebo area rather than long-distance tourists, since the beach itself is not a headline destination but rather a convenient local swimming spot. Getting to Kosaza from Nagasaki takes a bit of planning: a JR train to Sasebo Station runs about 70 minutes and costs roughly ¥2,270 ($14.76), followed by a local bus of about 30 more minutes to reach Kosaza itself. This two-leg journey means the beach sees more day-trippers from Sasebo city than from Nagasaki directly. Visitors who prioritize a shallow, calm entry point suitable for young children, without the crowds or built-out infrastructure of Nagasaki's bigger beach destinations, are the best fit for Kosaza.
