Nawate Street Frog Market

Nawate Street runs along the Metoba River in Matsumoto City and takes its nickname from the frog statues and frog-themed goods sold along its length, tied to a local legend about frogs restoring the river's water quality. Stalls and small permanent shops sell handmade crafts, whittled wooden toys, vintage kimono and bric-a-brac, folk art, and frog-motif trinkets alongside a few antique dealers. The mix leans toward genuine secondhand and handmade items rather than factory-made souvenirs, though frog-themed trinkets aimed squarely at visitors are common near the entrances. Most vendors deal in cash only, reflecting the market's informal, stall-based character; prices on secondhand and antique items are sometimes open to light negotiation, unlike fixed-price shops elsewhere in the city, though this is not universal. No tax-refund scheme applies to the small stall vendors here.
