Nakamachi Kura Warehouse District

Nakamachi is a former merchant district in Matsumoto City built around white-walled kura storehouses that once held rice, sake, and goods for the surrounding castle town. The street now houses independent shops selling Shinshu crafts and provisions: Kiso-region lacquerware, hand-thrown ceramics, antiques, and miso and sake from local producers, alongside a scattering of cafes housed in converted storehouses. Goods skew toward genuine regional craft rather than mass-produced souvenirs, since many shops are run by the artisans or their descendants and sell work made on-site or nearby. Payment is a mix of cash and card, with larger craft and gallery shops accepting IC cards and credit cards while smaller family stalls prefer cash; prices are fixed, and bargaining is not customary. Duty-free tax refunds are available at a handful of the larger craft retailers but not at most small stores, so it is worth asking before assuming a refund applies. The district has a quiet, walkable atmosphere with far lighter crowds than central Matsumoto's main shopping streets, and several kura buildings have been converted into cafes serving coffee and Nagano apple desserts. The must-visit corners are the cluster of lacquerware and pottery shops near the Nakamachi Kura-no-Kaido signboard and the sake tasting rooms toward the southern end of the street.
