Nojiri Lake Summer Beach

Nojiri Lake, in Shinano Town in the northern Nagano highlands near the Niigata border, hosts one of the prefecture's most established freshwater swimming beaches. The shore is fine sand rather than pebble, sloping gently into clear, cold mountain-fed water; the lake sits at roughly 650 m elevation, so the water stays noticeably cooler than lowland rivers even in mid-summer. The designated swimming area is roped off and shallow near the shore, sheltered from wind by surrounding hills, giving it a calm, cove-like feel rather than an exposed, wave-prone shoreline. This is firmly a family beach: shallow water, a lifeguarded swim zone during July and August, and a laid-back lakeside-resort atmosphere rather than anything resembling a party scene. Amenities are modest but sufficient for a day trip — boat rentals for those wanting to explore beyond the swim zone, a small seasonal café serving drinks and light food, and nearby campsites that make the lake a popular base for a multi-day stay rather than a single afternoon visit. There are no full changing-room complexes or extensive restaurant rows; visitors typically bring their own gear and rely on the campsites or nearby Shinano Town for anything more substantial. Lifeguard coverage runs only during the official swimming season of July and August; outside those months the beach is quiet and unsupervised. Access from Nagano City takes about an hour combining train and a 20-minute walk from Nojiri station, or a similar drive by car, with parking available near the lakeside camping areas. The lake's position amid forested hills makes it as much a scenic and camping destination as a swimming spot.
