Kamikochi Alpine Valley

Kamikochi is a highland alpine valley in the Northern Japan Alps, closed to private vehicles and reached only by shuttle bus or taxi from the Sawando or Hirayu gateways. From the bus terminal, a short walk leads to Kappa Bridge, a wooden suspension bridge over the clear turquoise Azusa River with the jagged Hotaka mountain range rising directly behind it — widely considered one of the most photographed mountain views in Japan. From the bridge, well-maintained flat trails follow the river in both directions: upstream toward Myojin Pond, a sacred, glass-still reflecting pool ringed by forest about an hour's walk away, and downstream toward Taisho Pond, a marshy lake dotted with the bleached trunks of trees drowned when a 1915 volcanic eruption dammed the river. Both routes are largely flat, boardwalked riverside paths suitable for a half-day outing, while more ambitious hikers continue further to Tokusawa or use Kamikochi as the trailhead for multi-day climbs into the Hotaka range. A relaxed half-day visit covering Kappa Bridge, Taisho Pond, and Myojin Pond takes about 4 to 6 hours of walking; a shorter loop around just Kappa Bridge and the Weston Relief can be done in under two hours. Kamikochi is open only from late April to mid-November, when the road and facilities are accessible; it closes completely in winter. The valley is busiest in the peak summer holiday weeks of late July through August and during the autumn foliage season in mid-to-late October, when the surrounding slopes turn red and gold; arriving on the first shuttle bus of the day, before 8am, avoids the worst of the midday crowds at Kappa Bridge. The clearest mountain views typically come in early morning before cloud builds over the peaks in the afternoon.
