Takachiho — Gorge, Shrine & Yokagura Dance

Takachiho Gorge sits 110 km northwest of Miyazaki City in the mountains of Nishiusuki District, reached in about 90 minutes by car via Route 218 or the Higashi-Kyushu and Kyushu-Odan expressways. Travelers without a car can take the JR limited express to Nobeoka Station (roughly 50 minutes, ¥1,800), then transfer to a Takachiho-bound bus (about 90 minutes, ¥1,050); the full one-way trip runs close to three hours, so an early departure from Miyazaki is recommended. The gorge itself is a narrow basalt canyon carved by the Gokase River, lined with columnar joint cliffs and fed by the 17-meter Manai Falls; rowboat rentals let visitors paddle beneath the falls, though boats are limited and queues form quickly after mid-morning. A short walk uphill from the gorge leads to Takachiho Shrine, home to an 800-year-old cedar and the site of nightly Yokagura kagura dance performances staged for visitors between 8:00 and 9:00 pm year-round. Kushifuru Shrine and Amano Iwato Shrine, tied to the sun goddess Amaterasu myth, sit a short drive further out and reward travelers with more time in the area. A practical itinerary starts with an early-morning arrival at the gorge (by 9:00 am) to beat tour-bus crowds and secure a rowboat slot, followed by the gorge walkway and Manai Falls viewpoint, lunch at one of the noodle or grilled-chicken (jidori) stalls near the shrine approach, an afternoon visit to Takachiho Shrine and the cedar grove, and the evening kagura performance before the drive or bus back. April through November covers the most comfortable walking weather, with November standing out for autumn foliage along the gorge rim and for the start of the annual all-night Yokagura ritual season that runs into February at village halls around town. Food options cluster around the shrine approach and the gorge parking area, including soba, katsu, and Takachiho beef restaurants; the gorge itself has no dining, so visitors should plan a stop before or after the walk.
