Ebino Kogen Volcanic Plateau & Kirishima National Park

Ebino Kogen sits on the Kirishima volcanic plateau about 80 kilometers from Miyazaki City, reached in roughly 80 minutes by car via Route 268. Travelers without a car can take a JR Kyushu train to Kobayashi Station (about 70 minutes, ¥1,480), then one of two daily buses up to the plateau, though the limited schedule makes an early departure essential. The plateau sits at roughly 1,200 meters elevation and is ringed by volcanic peaks, including Mount Karakunidake and Mount Shirotori, with a network of crater-lake trails looping past Lake Rokkannon-miike, Lake Byakushiike, and Lake Fudouike. The Ebino Kogen Visitor Center at the trailhead has maps and current volcanic-activity notices, since parts of the plateau close periodically depending on gas conditions at nearby peaks. A typical day starts with a morning walk of the roughly 4-kilometer crater-lake loop trail, which takes about two hours over gently rolling terrain, followed by a soak at one of the plateau's rustic outdoor onsen baths fed by the same volcanic system. Hikers wanting more of a challenge can continue onto the Karakunidake ascent trail, a steeper round trip of three to four hours to the summit and back. May brings the plateau's namesake azalea (miyama-kirishima) blooms across the hillsides, drawing the largest crowds of the year, while October and November bring autumn color to the beech and maple stands around the lakes, and winter occasionally dusts the plateau in snow. Food options are limited to the visitor center café and a handful of small restaurants near the onsen area, so packing a lunch is sensible for a full day on the trails. Afternoon light works well for photographing the crater lakes, and visitors should plan to descend or catch the return bus before dusk, since the mountain road has no lighting.
