Okuragahama Beach

Okuragahama Beach stretches along the coast at Hyuga City, roughly 65 km north of Miyazaki City, and is one of the prefecture's better-known surf beaches outside the Miyazaki City area. The sand is coarse and grey-brown, typical of the northern Hyuga-nada shoreline, and the beach is long and open with no sheltering headland, so it takes the full force of incoming Pacific swell. This makes it popular with surfers, with the best wave conditions from October through March and warmer, gentler water for swimming from June through September. The shape is broad and gently curving rather than a tight cove, backed by low dunes and a mix of surf shops and small guesthouses rather than large resort development. The vibe leans toward a dedicated surf and outdoor crowd, quieter and more local than the beaches directly around Miyazaki City, though summer swimmers and families do use the shallower sections near the access points. Amenities include surf-rental shops, surf lesson operators, changing rooms, and cold-water showers; a restaurant is within walking distance of the main beach entrance, though dedicated beachside dining is limited otherwise. There are no beach lifeguards, so swimmers should stay close to shore, particularly outside summer. Okuragahama is reached via JR Nippo Main Line to Hyuga Station, about 50 minutes from Miyazaki and roughly 840 yen, followed by a ten-minute taxi ride to the beach for around 1,200 yen; travelers driving from Miyazaki City should allow just over an hour.
