Byobu-iwa Rocky Shore

Byobu-iwa Rocky Shore lies near Hyuga City, about 60 km north of Miyazaki City, and is a dramatic stretch of folded sedimentary rock rather than a conventional sand beach. The name means 'folding screen rock,' describing the tightly ridged, near-vertical rock formations that run along the shoreline and are best appreciated from the elevated observation platform above the water. There is little to no sand here, and swimming is not the draw -- the shore is exposed directly to open ocean swell, and waves crash forcefully against the rock ledges, particularly dramatic from October through April when winter swell is strongest. The setting is rugged and largely undeveloped, with free access and a car park nearby, but no changing rooms, food stalls, or lifeguards. Visitors come primarily for photography and coastal scenery rather than beach activities, and the atmosphere is quiet outside of scenic-drive traffic along Route 10. The rock formation is part of the broader Hyuga coastline geology that also produces the Devil's Washboard ledges seen further south at Aoshima, though Byobu-iwa's ridges are steeper and more pronounced. The site is reached by car via Route 10, about 70 minutes from central Miyazaki City; there is no direct public transit to the viewpoint, and the walk from the parking area to the observation platform is short but involves some uneven, rocky ground.
