Cafe Independants is Kyoto's most celebrated bohemian café — an underground space in the basement of the 1928 Building at Sanjo-Karasuma in Nakagyo Ward that has been the creative and social heart of Kyoto's arts community since the 1990s. The 1928 Building itself is a striking piece of early Showa-era Western architecture — a brick and reinforced concrete structure from 1928 that once housed a newspaper company and now contains galleries, studios, and event spaces. In the basement, Cafe Independants operates with the character of a Paris basement café transposed to Kyoto: art exhibitions line the roughly plastered walls, the brick arches overhead frame a slightly subterranean light, and the mix of students, artists, designers, and international visitors creates a reliably interesting atmosphere. The food is honest and simple: daily pasta, simple sandwiches, craft beer, wine, and coffee at prices that remain accessible to working artists. The café functions as an event venue hosting live music, film screenings, art openings, and readings — events are posted on the building's notice boards and social media. Prices for food and drink are deliberately low, reflecting the venue's commitment to an accessible, non-commercial cultural space.
