Kyoto is Japan's ancient imperial capital, home to over 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, and 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Once the seat of the Japanese emperor for over a millennium, the city preserves traditional culture, geisha districts, and stunning gardens that contrast beautifully with modern urban life.

Top 10 Day Trips

The best excursions from Kyoto.

1

Nara

πŸ“ 40km⏱️ 45 min

Japan's first permanent capital (710–784 CE), Nara is home to the world's largest bronze Buddha (Daibutsu) at Todai-ji, over 1,200 wild deer roaming freely through Nara Park, and the atmospheric Kasuga Taisha Shrine lined with thousands of stone and bronze lanterns. The deer are considered divine messengers and can be fed shika senbei crackers (Β₯200). Nara also has the ancient machiya townhouses of Naramachi district and exceptional Buddhist sculpture.

Highlights: Todai-ji Temple and the Great Buddha, Wild deer in Nara Park, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Kofuku-ji Five-Story Pagoda, Naramachi old town district
2

Osaka

πŸ“ 75km⏱️ 30 min

Japan's most vibrant and food-obsessed city, Osaka offers a completely different energy from Kyoto β€” chaotic, neon-lit, and brilliantly entertaining. Visit Dotonbori entertainment district with its iconic Glico running man sign, Osaka Castle, the retro Shinsekai neighborhood, Kuromon Ichiba Market ('Osaka's Kitchen'), and the legendary street food scene. The city's 'kuidaore' (eat until you drop) philosophy makes it Japan's ultimate culinary destination.

Highlights: Dotonbori entertainment district, Osaka Castle and museum, Kuromon Ichiba Market, Shinsekai retro district, Takoyaki and okonomiyaki street food
3

Hiroshima and Miyajima Island

πŸ“ 330km⏱️ 1h 45min

One of Japan's most emotionally powerful day trips, combining Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Museum and the UNESCO-listed Atomic Bomb Dome with Miyajima Island's iconic floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine. Depart Kyoto before 7:30AM to maximize time. The journey is perfectly achievable as a day trip but many travelers prefer an overnight on Miyajima to experience the island after day-trippers depart.

Highlights: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), Itsukushima Shrine floating torii gate, Mt. Misen ropeway and summit views, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki with noodles
4

Himeji

πŸ“ 100km⏱️ 1h

Himeji Castle, the 'White Heron Castle,' is Japan's finest surviving feudal castle and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The brilliant white six-story keep dates from 1609 and has never been damaged by war or earthquake. The adjacent Kokoen Garden is one of Hyogo Prefecture's finest Japanese stroll gardens. During cherry blossom season, Himeji Castle grounds are among the most photographed sites in Japan.

Highlights: Himeji Castle (UNESCO World Heritage), Kokoen Garden, Engyo-ji Temple on Mt. Shosha, Cherry blossom viewing in spring, Castle town cafes and wagashi
5

Uji

πŸ“ 18km⏱️ 20 min

Just 20 minutes south of Kyoto, Uji is Japan's matcha tea capital and home to Byodoin Temple β€” the breathtaking 11th-century Heian masterpiece depicted on the 10-yen coin. Also contains Ujigami Shrine (Japan's oldest surviving Shinto shrine building, c. 1060 CE) and the Genji Museum dedicated to Lady Murasaki Shikibu's Tale of Genji, partly set here. The entire riverside is lined with matcha tea shops selling tasting flights of Japan's finest ceremonial grade matcha.

Highlights: Byodoin Temple Phoenix Hall (UNESCO), Ujigami Shrine (Japan's oldest shrine), Matcha tasting at Nakamura Tokichi or Tsuen Tea (since 1160 CE), Tale of Genji Museum, Scenic Uji River walk
6

Kobe

πŸ“ 75km⏱️ 50 min

Japan's most cosmopolitan port city, shaped by 19th-century international trade history. Famous above all for Kobe beef β€” the world's most celebrated wagyu cattle breed β€” and the Kitano Ijinkan foreigner's mansion district where Western-style 19th-century homes survive in the hillside above the port. The Nunobiki Herb Garden (accessible by ropeway) offers harbor views, while Arima Onsen in the mountains above Kobe is one of Japan's oldest hot spring towns.
