Arashiyama Yoshimura occupies what is arguably the finest restaurant view in Kyoto — a building directly above the Togetsukyo Bridge on the Oi River in Arashiyama, Ukyo Ward, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the river, the bridge, and the maple- and cedar-covered mountain slope of Arashiyama rising behind.

Perched above the Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama with spectacular views of the river and maple-covered mountains, Yoshimura serves excellent buckwheat soba alongside the best view in the district. The seasonal tempura soba and cold zaru soba are perfect after a morning in the Bamboo Grove.

The restaurant serves handmade buckwheat soba in the traditional style: grown and milled in Japan, hand-cut on-site, and served in two principal forms — cold zaru soba with dipping sauce, and warm soba in seasonal broth. The tempura soba combines crisp seasonal vegetable and prawn tempura with a light dashi broth; the tori nanban (chicken and spring onion) soba is a warming autumn and winter staple. The quality of the noodles is genuine — nutty, slightly chewy, with the characteristic earthy aroma of freshly milled buckwheat. The view, however, is the reason most guests come, and the restaurant manages the unusual feat of matching it with food that justifies the visit independently. Arashiyama is best visited early in the day before crowds build in the Bamboo Grove and around the shrine area; Yoshimura provides an ideal lunch after a morning walk. Located at 3 Sagatenryujitsukurimichi, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, Japan.

Tips for visiting

  • Arrive just before 11AM opening to secure a window seat overlooking the bridge
  • Cold zaru soba in warm weather; tempura soba in cooler months — both excel here
  • The view from the upper floor (if available) is higher and more expansive
  • The restaurant seats 180 people; waits are rare outside peak tourist weekends
  • Combine with the free exterior garden of Tenryu-ji and the Bamboo Grove, both within a 5-minute walk

Accessibility

The restaurant is a modern multi-story building with lifts connecting the floors. Wheelchair access is generally available. The Arashiyama riverside area itself is mostly flat and accessible, though the Bamboo Grove path narrows in places.

Frequently asked questions

Is Arashiyama Yoshimura primarily about the view or the soba?

Both. The river and mountain view from the large windows is exceptional, but the soba is genuinely handmade on-site with quality buckwheat and is among the better soba served in a tourist-adjacent location in Kyoto.

How do I get a window seat?

Seating is first-come, first-served. Arriving at or before 11AM opening gives the best chance of a window position. The restaurant does not accept reservations.

When is the best season to visit for the view?

Autumn (mid-November) when the Arashiyama hillside turns deep red and orange is the most spectacular. Cherry blossom season (late March–early April) is also beautiful. Summer is green and lush; winter can be ethereal on clear days.

Is the menu available in English?

Yes. Yoshimura has English menus and is accustomed to international visitors. Photo menus are also displayed at the entrance.
