Temple in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, Kyoto
Nanzen-ji
Set at the foot of the Higashiyama mountains, Nanzen-ji is one of Japan's most important Zen Buddhist temple complexes. Founded in 1291 on the site of an imperial villa, it is the headquarters of the Nanzen school of Rinzai Zen. The massive Sanmon gate (1628) towers over the complex, and an incongruous but fascinating 19th-century red-brick aqueduct (suirokaku) runs through the grounds. Multiple sub-temples with beautiful gardens surround the main hall.
