Yasaka Shrine
Located at the eastern end of Shijo Avenue at the entrance to Gion, Yasaka Shrine is one of Kyoto's most important shrines, dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto and linked to plague prevention. The main pavilion with its distinctive two-story gate is beautifully lit at night. The shrine hosts the famous Gion Matsuri festival in July, the largest traditional festival in Japan, whose procession of elaborate floats has continued for over 1,000 years.
