Suma Aqualife Park Kobe

Suma Aqualife Park Kobe (Kobe Suma Suizokukan) is a mid-sized marine park and aquarium in Suma Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, occupying a coastal site adjacent to Suma Beach that has operated continuously since 1931 — making it one of Japan's older surviving aquarium facilities. The park centres on two principal areas: an indoor aquarium complex with tank galleries displaying over 500 species of marine life from the Seto Inland Sea, Pacific Ocean, and tropical regions, and an outdoor marine theatre where the park's dolphins, sea lions, and fur seal colony are kept and perform scheduled shows. The dolphin and sea lion performance programme, held in an open-air arena seating several hundred visitors, is the main draw for family visitors and runs twice daily at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM on most days. The indoor aquarium contains a walk-through tunnel tank displaying sharks, rays, and large bony fish at close proximity, as well as jellyfish display tanks, tropical reef tanks, and a shallow touch pool where visitors can handle starfish and sea cucumbers. The facility's proximity to Suma Beach means that summer visitors often combine the aquarium with a beach outing — the main entrance faces directly toward the beach promenade. In addition to the standard exhibits, the park maintains an outdoor penguin enclosure, a bird zone with pelicans and flamingos, and a botanical garden path connecting the western end of the site to a panoramic viewing hill above the Seto Inland Sea. A full visit covering all indoor tanks, the outdoor animal areas, and one dolphin show comfortably fills two to three hours. The park is a 10-minute walk from both JR Suma Station and Sanyo Electric Railway Suma Station, with straightforward access from central Kobe.
