Kobe Port Tower

Kobe Port Tower is the most recognisable structural landmark on the Kobe waterfront, rising 108 metres above Meriken Park in Hyogo Prefecture on a lattice steel frame shaped in a distinctive hyperboloid form — an architectural configuration that reduces wind resistance while requiring less material than a conventional cylindrical tower. First opened in 1963 and comprehensively refurbished in 2023 with a new rooftop ring observation deck and glass-floored sky walk, the tower serves as the centrepiece of the Meriken Park waterfront and is visible from vessels entering Kobe Bay. The tower's exterior is painted a striking vermilion red, making it highly photogenic against the blue harbour and the skyline of Port Island across the water. Visitors ascend by elevator to four observation levels, culminating in an outdoor rooftop ring at approximately 90 metres, which offers an unobstructed 360-degree panorama over Osaka Bay, the Rokko Mountains behind the city, and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge to the southwest. Glass floor segments on the sky walk level allow visitors to look directly down to the plaza below — a popular and vertigo-inducing photo spot. An interior exhibition on the ground and mezzanine floors documents the tower's history and the development of Kobe Port through photographs, scale models, and interactive panels. The tower cafe on an intermediate floor serves light meals and beverages with partial harbour views. After dark, the tower illuminates in seasonal colour schemes — blue and white in winter, pink in spring — and reflections ripple across the harbour surface below. Evening visits timed to sunset (varying by season) capture both golden-hour waterfront light and the transition into night illumination in a single trip. The tower is roughly a 10-minute walk from Kobe Station along the flat waterfront promenade.
