Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Maiko Park

Maiko Park sits at the foot of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (Pearl Bridge) on the Kobe side of the Akashi Strait in Tarumi Ward, Hyogo Prefecture, providing the closest accessible viewpoint in the city to the world's longest suspension bridge span at 1,991 metres between its two towers. The park itself — a landscaped coastal garden open to the public — offers unobstructed elevated views along the bridge's alignment toward Awaji Island. The cliffside is traversed by the Maiko Marine Promenade, a glass-floored enclosed walkway suspended beneath the bridge's road deck at a height of roughly 47 metres above sea level. Visitors on the promenade walk approximately 317 metres under the bridge structure, looking down through glass panels to the Akashi Strait's tidal currents below and up at the massive steel anchorage cables overhead. On clear days the full sweep of the Seto Inland Sea is visible to the west, with the profile of Awaji Island and, further, the silhouette of Shikoku on the horizon. The park gardens contain sakura trees that bloom in late March along the coastal path, a tea house, and a viewing terrace aligned directly with the bridge. Exhibits inside the promenade structure explain the engineering behind the bridge, which was completed in 1998 after nine years of construction and withstood a magnitude 7.3 aftershock during the build in 1995. The Maiko area also features the historical Maiko-Hama coastal scenery long celebrated in Japanese waka poetry, and the western terminus of the Sanyo Electric Railway makes the area accessible without a car. Evening visits allow visitors to watch the bridge's tower lights illuminate after dusk, casting reflections across the strait — one of the most dramatic coastal light displays in Hyogo Prefecture.
