Nagoya Port Aquarium

Nagoya Port Aquarium is one of Japan's largest and most technically sophisticated marine life facilities, occupying a striking angular building on the Nagoya Port waterfront in Minato Ward, Aichi. The aquarium is divided into two main buildings: the North Building presents a journey through ocean environments from Japanese coastal seas and the open Pacific to the Antarctic, while the South Building houses large performance pools for beluga whales and bottlenose dolphins. The South Building's 3,000-seat performance stadium hosts daily dolphin and beluga shows in which trained animals display natural behaviours, with bilingual narration contextualising each activity within marine biology — the shows are the aquarium's most popular draw and require no separate ticket. The main tank, 13 metres deep, replicates open-ocean conditions and houses a school of yellowfin tuna, manta rays, loggerhead sea turtles, and pelagic sharks in a vast blue-water environment viewed through acrylic panels on multiple floors. The Antarctic section recreates sub-zero temperatures to house king and gentoo penguins in naturalistic refrigerated enclosures. A touch pool allows children to handle coastal invertebrates, while a dedicated coral reef tank presents Indo-Pacific reef life in vivid colour. The aquarium sits within the broader Nagoya Port waterfront area, which includes a science museum, a large Ferris wheel, and the Antarctic research ship Fuji — all separately visitable for a full port-area day. A full visit including a dolphin or beluga show typically requires 2 to 3 hours. Summer evening hours extend to 8:00PM on select dates and the port area is attractive after dark.
