Waraniene Weaving Village

Waraniene is a Senoufo village a short drive from Korhogo in northern Cote d'Ivoire's Poro Region, organised around cooperatives of handloom weavers who produce traditional strip-woven cotton cloth using techniques passed down through generations. Unlike a conventional market, the village functions as a working craft site: narrow looms are set up under shelters where weavers can be watched producing long strips of cotton cloth that are later sewn together into larger pieces used for clothing and ceremonial textiles. Goods sold are almost entirely authentic, made on-site by the weavers themselves rather than sourced from wholesale trinket suppliers, though finished pieces vary in fineness and price depending on the weaver's skill and the complexity of the pattern. Bargaining is customary but should be measured against the labour involved in hand-weaving, and cooperatives generally appreciate visitors who take time to watch the process before buying. Payment is cash only in XOF; there is no card infrastructure in the village and no tax-refund scheme. The atmosphere is quiet and rural, a contrast to Abidjan's crowded markets, and there are no formal food stalls on-site, so visitors typically eat before or after the visit in Korhogo.
