Fakaha Korhogo Cloth Village

Fakaha is a Senoufo village near Korhogo in northern Cote d'Ivoire, recognised as the primary source of authentic hand-painted Korhogo cloth, known locally as fila. Artists in the village work on hand-woven cotton cloth, applying natural fermented mud dye by hand to depict symbolic figures drawn from Senoufo tradition, including animals, masks, and geometric patterns, a technique distinct from the printed wax fabrics sold in Abidjan's markets. Because production happens directly in the village, the ratio of genuinely hand-painted cloth to mass-produced imitation is very high compared to Korhogo cloth sold in tourist shops elsewhere in the country, where printed reproductions are common. Prices are generally negotiable, though village artists tend to set prices in line with the size and intricacy of the painted design rather than open haggling from an inflated starting price. Payment is cash only in XOF, with no card facilities available in the village and no tax-refund scheme. The setting is rural and unhurried, with artists often working outdoors where visitors can watch the mud-dyeing process; there are no formal restaurants on-site, so meals are best planned around a stop in Korhogo.
