Grand Marche d'Adjame

Grand Marche d'Adjame is a multi-storey commercial complex in the Adjame district of Abidjan and ranks among the largest markets in West Africa, drawing wholesale and retail buyers from across Cote d'Ivoire and neighbouring countries. The building's lower floors and surrounding streets are given over to wax-print and wholesale textile traders, who sell fabric by the bolt as well as by the metre, while upper floors and side alleys hold produce, general goods, and smaller craft stalls. Because much of the trade is wholesale, prices for bulk fabric purchases are noticeably lower than at tourist-oriented outlets, and most vendors deal in authentic, locally sourced or imported textiles rather than souvenir trinkets. Bargaining is standard practice, particularly for fabric bought in quantity, and cash in XOF is the only practical payment method; card acceptance is essentially nonexistent among individual traders and there is no tax-refund scheme. The market is extremely crowded and can feel overwhelming, especially in the fabric section during peak morning trading hours, and the multi-storey layout makes navigation without a local guide difficult for first-time visitors. Food vendors selling attieke, grilled fish, and fresh fruit operate throughout the complex and surrounding streets.
