St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral rises above the Plateau district on Boulevard Angoulvant, its swept concrete roofline and asymmetric bell tower a landmark of Abidjan's skyline since it opened in 1985. Visitors approach along a raised plaza that frames the building's curved, saddle-shaped roof, an engineering signature of the structure's modernist design. Inside, the nave is lit by a mosaic of stained-glass panels that filter colored light across the pews, and a large mural depicting scenes from West African Christian history covers one interior wall. Most visitors spend 30-45 minutes walking the nave, viewing the stained glass and the raised altar area, then stepping back outside to photograph the exterior from the plaza or from across Boulevard Angoulvant, where the full sweep of the roofline is visible. The cathedral overlooks the Ebrie Lagoon, and the terrace beside the building offers a view over the water toward Cocody. Weekday mid-mornings are quietest, with only a handful of other visitors and staff present; the building fills for Sunday Mass, when photography and casual visiting are discouraged out of respect for the congregation. Weekday afternoons can also see brief closures for private services or maintenance.
