Plateau District

Plateau is the central business district of Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, occupying a peninsula bounded by the Ebrie Lagoon, and is the country's commercial and administrative heart, home to government ministries, bank headquarters and the city's tallest towers. Walking the district takes in landmarks such as the Cathedral of St Paul with its striking modern architecture, the Plateau's cluster of high-rise office towers along Avenue Chardy and Avenue Franchet d'Esperey, and the lagoon-front promenade near the Presidential Palace grounds, which cannot be entered but forms a recognizable backdrop. The district's street markets and roadside vendors around Place de la Republique add everyday commercial life alongside the formal towers. A two to three hour walk covers the main streets, the cathedral exterior, and a stretch of the lagoon promenade, with the option to extend the visit toward Cocody by crossing one of the lagoon bridges or by taking the Ebrie Lagoon water bus, known locally as the bateau-bus, for views of the skyline from the water. Weekday daytime hours show Plateau at its busiest and most animated, with office workers, street vendors and traffic filling the grid of streets, while evenings bring a different character as the lagoon-front lights come on and the towers are illuminated. The best photo vantage points are from the lagoon promenade looking back at the skyline, and from the water bus itself for a wider view of the district's towers rising above the water. Weekends are noticeably quieter, since Plateau is primarily a business district and many offices close.
