Azagny National Park

Azagny National Park lies near the town of Grand-Lahou in the Grands-Ponts Region of Cote d'Ivoire, a coastal park combining swampy forest, savanna and lagoon habitats between the Ebrie Lagoon system and the Bandama River. The park protects forest elephants, buffalo, various primate species and a rich wetland birdlife, with its landscape shaped by the transition zone between southern rainforest and the drier savanna further inland. Access is coordinated through the park office in Grand-Lahou, which arranges either boat transport through the lagoon channels or 4x4 vehicle access depending on the season and the specific area being visited, since much of the terrain floods seasonally. Guided visits typically combine a boat portion through mangrove-lined channels, where birdlife and occasional primates can be spotted from the water, with a walking or vehicle-based segment into the drier savanna sections where larger mammals are more likely to be encountered. A half-day to full-day visit is standard, depending on how much of the park's varied terrain visitors want to cover, and an early departure improves the chances of animal sightings before the heat of midday settles in. The dry season from December to February offers the most reliable access, since some of the park's channels and low-lying trails become difficult or impassable during heavier rains. Because Azagny sees relatively few visitors and requires advance coordination through the park office, it suits travelers with some flexibility in their itinerary and an interest in a mixed forest-wetland-savanna landscape rather than a straightforward wildlife safari.
