Abidjan is the largest city in Ivory Coast and the commercial capital of French-speaking West Africa, a metropolis of roughly 6.3 million people built across and around the Ebrie Lagoon on the Gulf of Guinea. Its thirteen communes range from the high-rise banking district of Plateau and the villa quarters of Cocody to the vast working neighbourhoods of Abobo, Adjame and Yopougon, linked by bridges, shared taxis and lagoon boats.
Accommodation overview
Abidjan's accommodation falls into four clusters. Plateau holds the towers and the international brands: Noom, Pullman, Mövenpick, Tiama, Novotel and Seen all sit within a few streets of each other, at 40,000-268,000 XOF (~$70-$470) a night depending on brand and season, with the ministries and banks on the doorstep and almost nothing open at weekends. Cocody, from Vieux Cocody through Deux Plateaux to Riviera, mixes the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire and the design-led La Maison Palmier with dozens of small résidences and villa hotels at 30,000-120,000 XOF (~$53-$211), which suits longer stays and anyone who prefers residential streets to a business district. Marcory, and Zone 4 and Biétry in particular, is the expatriate belt: Novotel Marcory, Adagio, ibis Styles, ONOMO Allure and a long list of independents at 40,000-120,000 XOF (~$70-$211), with the city's densest run of restaurants and bars outside the door and the airport 15 minutes away. Below that sit the budget communes, Treichville, Koumassi and Yopougon, where rooms at 18,000-51,000 XOF (~$32-$90) buy air conditioning, a bar and a secure gate, but longer journeys into the centre. Port-Bouët, finally, exists for flights: the Radisson Blu and ONOMO airport hotels are worth their premium only for an early departure or a long layover.

Abidjan's hotel market runs on business travel, so Monday to Thursday is the expensive half of the week in Plateau and Marcory, and weekend rates at the international brands can fall by a third. Conference season and the December-January holidays push the top hotels to capacity, and rates rise sharply around major summits held at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire and the Radisson Blu; check the event calendar before fixing dates. Since the 2026 finance act, a nightly tax of 500 XOF (~$0
per person at unclassified hotels, rising to 2,000 XOF (~$3
at three-star and above, is charged separately from the room rate and VAT, and it must appear as its own line on the invoice. Rooms are quoted in XOF; international cards work at the chains but many small hotels and résidences still want cash, and a few offer a discount for paying in cash. Traffic is the real constraint on where to stay: allow 45-60 minutes between Riviera and Plateau at peak, and 30-45 minutes from Plateau to the airport, so match the district to where the days will actually be spent. Airport transfers booked through a hotel typically cost 15,000-30,000 XOF (~$26-$53), more than a metered or ride-hailed car, but they remove the arrivals-hall negotiation after a late flight
