  • Best seasonAutumn to winter (October-February) for valley fog; spring for green badlands

The 'dying town' of Civita perches on an eroding tufa pinnacle reached only by a long footbridge, just over the Umbrian border in Lazio. From the belvedere it appears to float above the Valle dei Calanchi, often wreathed in dawn mist.
