Basilica di San Francesco, Assisi

The great twin-level Basilica of St Francis and its arcaded flank rise above the Umbrian plain, best caught at golden hour from below or from the road toward Santa Maria degli Angeli. The pink-and-white stone of Assisi glows warmly in late light.

Best time: Golden hour and sunset, when the southwest-facing flank and campanile catch warm raking light

Orvieto Duomo Facade

The cathedral of Orvieto presents one of Italy's most dazzling Gothic facades, layered with gold-ground mosaics, marble reliefs and a great rose window. The west-southwest-facing front ignites when struck by afternoon sun.

Best time: Golden hour, mid-to-late afternoon, when direct sun lights the gilded facade

Piano Grande di Castelluccio (Fioritura)

The vast Piano Grande plateau, ringed by the Monti Sibillini, erupts in bands of red poppies, blue cornflowers and yellow lentil blossom during the fioritura from late May to early July. Low morning light and dawn mist make it Umbria's signature landscape shot.

Best time: Sunrise and early morning for low side-light and mist; pre-sunset golden hour also works

Lake Trasimeno Sunset from Castiglione del Lago

From the southwest corner of Lake Trasimeno, the town and its medieval Rocca del Leone stand against open water reaching north and east. At sunset the sky and lake glow with afterglow while the fortress and Isola Maggiore turn to silhouette.

Best time: Sunset and golden hour into blue hour, for glowing water and a backlit town

Gubbio from the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo

Reached by the open-cage funicular up Monte Ingino, the terrace by the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo looks down over the grey-stone medieval town of Gubbio, with Piazza Grande, the Palazzo dei Consoli and the rooftops spread below against the Umbrian hills.

Best time: Late afternoon and golden hour, when the west-southwest view front-lights the town facades

Civita di Bagnoregio Viewpoint

The 'dying town' of Civita perches on an eroding tufa pinnacle reached only by a long footbridge, just over the Umbrian border in Lazio. From the belvedere it appears to float above the Valle dei Calanchi, often wreathed in dawn mist.

Best time: Sunrise and early-morning golden hour, looking east-southeast as mist fills the valley

Ponte delle Torri, Spoleto

The Ponte delle Torri is a soaring medieval aqueduct bridge, around 230 metres long and 80 metres high, spanning the wooded Tessino gorge below Spoleto's hilltop fortress. The ring walk of the Giro della Rocca gives the classic head-on view of its tall arches.

Best time: Morning golden hour, when low light rakes the arches across the south-southeast-facing gorge

Castelluccio di Norcia on its Hilltop

The lone hamlet of Castelluccio crowns an isolated hill rising from the Piano Grande, framed by the Sibillini peaks. With the open plain around it the angle is flexible, and during the fioritura the village floats above bands of flowering colour.

Best time: Sunrise for front-lit calm light and low mist; a dark-sky spot for night photography

Perugia Panorama from Giardini Carducci

The Giardini Carducci terrace above the underground Rocca Paolina is Perugia's great panoramic balcony, opening south and southwest over the Valle Umbra toward Assisi and Monte Subasio, with an open western sky for sunset.

Best time: Sunset and golden hour over the valley; blue hour for the lit city

Cascata delle Marmore

The Cascata delle Marmore, an ancient Roman-engineered cascade dropping 165 metres in three leaps, thunders down a wooded gorge near Terni. The lower belvedere looks up the gorge to the full drop, with rainbows hanging in the spray on sunny afternoons.

Best time: Morning golden hour or soft overcast for even light; the falls run only at scheduled release times

Lago di Piediluco

Lake Piediluco is a sheltered, hill-ringed lake near Terni, with pastel houses lining the shore beneath the wooded cone of Monte Luco. The calm water gives mirror reflections, especially at dawn, and rowing regattas add summer foreground interest.

Best time: Sunrise into golden hour, when the sun rises over the lake and eastern hills for reflections

Montefalco, the Balcony of Umbria

Hilltop Montefalco is nicknamed 'la ringhiera dell'Umbria', the balcony of Umbria, for its near 360-degree views over the Valle Umbra and the Sagrantino vineyards. Its walls give sunrise views toward Assisi and sunset views over the Martani mountains.

Best time: Sunrise from the eastern walls toward Assisi; sunset from the western walls; blue hour in the circular piazza
