Piazza del Campo is the shell-shaped medieval square at the heart of Siena, ringed by the Palazzo Pubblico and the 87 m Torre del Mangia. By day it fills with visitors seated on the sloping brick floor; at sunrise it is almost empty, and the fan of nine brick sections catches low light. The best vantage points are the upper edge of the shell by Fonte Gaia and the cafes along the lower side.

Twice a year the square becomes the Palio di Siena (2 July and 16 August), when the surface is covered with tufa soil and the area is closed to ordinary photography access; viewing places are crowded and unreserved spots fill hours ahead. Outside these dates, the square is free to enter at all times.

Tripods are generally tolerated early in the morning but not in the crowds of the daytime. Drones are restricted in the historic centre under Italian rules.
