A rediscovered underground chamber below the Cathedral with 13th-century frescoes that stayed hidden for centuries.
The Crypt lies beneath the Cathedral choir and was rediscovered and cleared in the 1990s after being sealed and filled with rubble for centuries. Its walls carry vivid 13th-century frescoes in the style of the school preceding Duccio, depicting stories from the Old and New Testaments, which survived because they were buried. The crypt is a reminder of how the Cathedral was extended eastwards over the hillside with substructures. Its installation, with lighting and an audio guide, is compact and takes about twenty minutes.
