A compact Gothic marble church on the riverbank with elegant spires reflected in the Arno. Ideal for reflections and architectural detail.
The tiny Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina stands directly on the south bank of the Arno, its spires and marble tabernacles reflected in the water at slack river. It was moved in the 19th century to its present raised position because of flood risk. The Lungarno Gambacorti around it forms a quiet foreground.
The church is best photographed at sunrise from the opposite bank and at dusk from the Ponte Solferino, when Pisa's Lungarno palaces glow in warm tones.
