Pisa's main art museum in a former Benedictine monastery on the Arno, with medieval and Renaissance panels and sculpture including works by Masaccio and Simone Martini.
The Museo Nazionale di San Matteo occupies the cloisters of a medieval Benedictine monastery beside the Arno and holds the principal collection of medieval and early Renaissance art in Pisa. Its holdings include panel paintings from the 12th to 15th centuries, among them a polyptych by Simone Martini and works by Masaccio and Gentile da Fabriano, as well as sculpture by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano and Donatello's reliquary bust of San Rossore. The museum is administered by the national museums of Pisa and offers a calmer visit than the Piazza dei Miracoli. Its galleries trace the development of Pisan art from the Romanesque period to the Renaissance.
