Rafting and Kayaking on the Arno

The Arno River between Pontassieve and the eastern edge of Florence offers one of Italy's more unusual adventure experiences: white-water kayaking and rafting within 25 kilometres of one of the world's great art cities. The navigable section runs approximately 15 to 20 kilometres through gorge passages beneath the Apennine foothills, passing medieval stone bridges, wooded riverbanks, and occasional Florentine hilltop villas before entering the city's floodplain.

River conditions depend entirely on seasonal rainfall. From March through early June, winter and spring precipitation fills the upper Arno basin, creating Class II to III rapids in the gorge sections at Pontassieve — fast, aerated water with standing waves, eddy lines, and occasional hydraulics that provide genuine whitewater thrills without exceeding the capabilities of guided beginners. By July, the river drops to a trickle and becomes effectively unnavigable for paddling. The season window is therefore narrow but predictable from year to year.

Canoa Club Firenze, based at Via dell'Antella 105 in Bagno a Ripoli, is the longest-established club on this section of the Arno, organising guided half-day kayak courses and river sessions for beginners and intermediate paddlers with qualified Italian paddling coaches. Arno Adventure in Pontassieve offers raft trips for groups from eight years old upward. Equipment — wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid, and paddle — is provided by both operators, and participants should wear a swimsuit underneath the wetsuit, as capsize recovery is a standard part of beginner instruction.

A guided half-day session is priced between €40 (~$44) and €70 (~$76) per person, inclusive of equipment, a safety briefing, and instruction. Groups are typically capped at 12 participants to ensure adequate supervision in the faster water sections. The safety briefing covers paddle technique, capsize procedure, river reading, and the specific hazards of the Pontassieve gorge, including fixed weirs and tree debris following winter floods; guides carry throw-lines and are trained in swift-water rescue. An independent Trenitalia regional train from Florence Santa Maria Novella to Pontassieve takes 25 minutes and costs approximately €3 (~$3), making the logistics simple even without a rental car.

All participants are required to be able to swim; non-swimmers cannot be accommodated on moving water sections. Children under eight years old are not accepted on the guided white-water sections, though flat-water kayaking options are available at the Canoa Club Firenze base near Bagno a Ripoli. April and May represent the optimum combination of water levels and ambient temperature, with the river typically running well and riverbanks vivid with spring vegetation. Operators should always be contacted the day before any planned session to confirm current river conditions, as flows vary significantly with upstream rainfall.
