A hot air balloon flight over the Tuscan countryside ranks among the most photographed experiences in Italy, and the region's combination of undulating hills, cypress avenues, medieval hilltop villages, and UNESCO-listed landscapes produces aerial views of extraordinary beauty. Flights depart at sunrise from launch sites in the Chianti zone or the Val d'Orcia — typically near Greve in Chianti or San Quirico d'Orcia — with passengers collected from Florence hotels in the early hours before dawn.

The inflation and pre-flight safety briefing take approximately 45 minutes before lift-off, covering boarding technique, landing brace position, and emergency procedures. The balloon climbs steadily to altitudes between 300 and 1,000 metres depending on wind conditions, drifting silently over the terrain below; the route is determined by prevailing winds rather than a fixed course. A typical flight lasts about one hour and covers 30 to 50 kilometres. The Val d'Orcia route is generally the more spectacular option, passing the Rocca d'Orcia castle, the thermal pools of Bagno Vignoni, cypress-lined ridges, and Brunello di Montalcino vineyards.

Prices typically range from €200 (~$218) to €280 (~$305) per person, inclusive of the flight, safety gear, a champagne toast, and a landing breakfast in a meadow. No prior experience or fitness is required, and no age limit applies to most adults, though minimum ages of 6-8 years apply to children.

Flights are entirely weather-dependent. Operators assess conditions at 5AM on flight days; high winds, low cloud, or thunderstorm risk result in postponement to the following morning, with a full refund or free rescheduling offered in most cases. Travellers should build at least one flexible day into their itinerary, as postponements occur on roughly one in three scheduled flights during shoulder season.

Physically, the experience requires standing for the duration of the flight and stepping over a basket wall approximately 90 to 120 centimetres in height during boarding; passengers with significant mobility limitations are generally unable to participate.
