Terme Merano (Merano Thermal Baths)

Terme Merano is the landmark thermal spa in the centre of Merano (Meran), the historic curative town of South Tyrol in northern Italy. Designed by the South Tyrolean architect Matteo Thun and opened in 2005, its glass cube and surrounding spa gardens rise beside the Passer river, giving the complex a rare alpine-urban setting where mountain bathing culture meets a town centre. The spa is built around 25 pools — roughly fifteen indoor pools open all year and around ten outdoor pools that come into use in the warmer months — together with a large sauna world of saunas and steam rooms that include herbal, bio and Finnish saunas, some set out in the gardens. A fitness area, relaxation rooms and the eight-hectare spa park complete the bathing landscape. The treatment menu leans heavily on South Tyrolean produce: signature rituals use locally grown apples, grapes and whey, alongside mountain hay and alpine herbs, reflecting a regional wellness tradition rooted in the surrounding orchards and meadows. Massages, beauty treatments and hydrotherapy round out the spa's offering. Access works on two tiers — a pools-only day ticket and a combined pools-and-sauna ticket — with both bought on arrival, while massages and beauty treatments are reserved in advance from the spa's menu. The sauna world follows the South Tyrolean custom of textile-free, mixed bathing, with regular Aufguss (sauna-infusion) ceremonies. Open 365 days a year, Terme Merano suits a half-day dip, a full day across pools and saunas, or a multi-day stay through partner-hotel packages, and its central position means the cafés, promenades and gardens of Merano are a short walk away.
