Buonconsiglio Castle

The Castello del Buonconsiglio is the largest and most important monument in Trentino and was for centuries the residence of the prince-bishops who ruled Trento as both spiritual and temporal sovereigns within the Holy Roman Empire. The complex grew over time from a 13th-century fortress. Its medieval core, Castelvecchio, with the round Torre d'Augusto and a fine Venetian-Gothic loggia, was joined in the 1530s by the Magno Palazzo, a sumptuous Renaissance residence built by Prince-Bishop Bernardo Cles and frescoed by leading Italian painters to proclaim his humanist taste and worldly power. The castle's single greatest treasure lies in the Torre Aquila: the Cycle of the Months, an exquisite early-15th-century fresco cycle depicting aristocratic and peasant life through the turning seasons, regarded as one of the finest works of secular Gothic painting in Europe. Through the era of the Council of Trent the castle stood at the heart of the prince-bishopric's authority, and in the 18th century the ecclesiastical state was swept away by Napoleonic reorganisation. In the modern era the castle became a museum, today displaying collections of medieval and modern art, sculpture, and archaeology across its state rooms, chapels, and arcaded courtyards. A visit moves from the austere medieval keep through richly decorated Renaissance halls to the intimate frescoed tower, tracing the rise and fall of one of the Alps' most powerful churchmen. An easy walk from the railway station, it is the indispensable cultural visit in Trento.
