Lake Braies (Pragser Wildsee)

Lake Braies, known in German as the Pragser Wildsee, sits at 1,496 metres at the head of the Prags valley in the eastern Dolomites and is widely called the pearl of the region's mountain lakes. Its fame rests on a single composition that appears on countless postcards: a weathered wooden boathouse and a row of varnished rowing boats moored on emerald-green water, with the pale wall of the Croda del Becco rising sheer behind. The lake is fed by underground springs and snowmelt, and its colour shifts through the day from deep teal in the early light to luminous turquoise under midday sun. A level, well-made path of about 3.5 kilometres circles the entire shore in around an hour and a half, crossing scree fans and threading through larch and pine, with constant changing views of the surrounding peaks; the far end offers a wilder shoreline and the start of demanding routes up toward Croda del Becco and the high Dolomite traverses. From early June to late September a boat-hire service rents the traditional wooden rowing boats by the half hour, the classic way to drift out onto the water. The lake's popularity has brought strict summer management: from the start of July to mid-September private vehicles cannot drive into the valley between nine in the morning and four in the afternoon, so visitors either arrive before or after that window or take the shuttle bus from Dobbiaco. Paid car parks near the lake charge by duration. There is little shade and weather changes quickly, so sturdy shoes and a warm layer are wise. The most magical hours are at dawn, when mist lifts off mirror-still water and the first light strikes the cliffs before the crowds arrive.
