Castello del Buonconsiglio

The Castello del Buonconsiglio rises on the eastern edge of Trento's historic centre as the largest and most important monumental complex in the whole region, and for centuries the residence of the prince-bishops who ruled the city as both spiritual and temporal lords. The castle is really several buildings grown together over time. At its core stands Castelvecchio, the medieval fortress with its round Torre d'Augusto, austere battlements, and a beautiful Venetian-Gothic loggia. Adjoining it is the Magno Palazzo, a magnificent Renaissance residence raised in the 1530s by Prince-Bishop Bernardo Cles, its halls richly frescoed by Italian masters with classical and biblical scenes that proclaimed the worldly power and humanist taste of its builder. Visitors wander through state rooms, chapels, and arcaded courtyards before reaching the castle's single most precious treasure, reached through the linking Torre Aquila: the Cycle of the Months, an early fifteenth-century fresco cycle that depicts aristocratic and peasant life through the turning year in vivid, intimate detail, and ranks among the finest secular Gothic painting in Europe. The complex also displays collections of medieval and modern art, sculpture, and archaeology drawn from across Trentino. A typical visit runs from ninety minutes to two and a half hours, and the Torre Aquila is best seen early before tour groups gather in its small chambers. The standard ticket can be combined with a supplement for the tower, and entry is free for younger children. Open Tuesday to Sunday with longer hours in the warmer months, the castle is an easy ten-minute walk from Trento's railway station, and its frescoes, courtyards, and history of the Council of Trent era make it the essential cultural visit in the city.
