Rock Climbing at Arco

Arco, set just north of Lake Garda where the Sarca valley opens out in southern Trentino, is regarded as one of the climbing capitals of the world and has hosted the prestigious Rock Master competition, now part of the Arco Climbing Festival, for decades. The surrounding limestone offers an enormous concentration of climbing: hundreds of well-bolted single-pitch sport routes on crags such as Massone, Belvedere and Nago, long multi-pitch adventures on the soaring walls of the Val di Sarca, and the famous solid grey rock that gives clean holds and excellent friction. The area caters to every standard, from gentle beginner crags with easy bolted lines to extreme overhanging test-pieces, and its position between the lake and the mountains gives a mild climate that allows climbing for much of the year, unusually long for the Alps. First-timers can take introductory courses that teach belaying, movement and safety on bolted beginner crags, while experienced climbers tackle hard sport pitches or committing multi-pitch routes. A reasonable level of fitness helps, there is no upper age limit for guided sessions, and children are normally taken on easy top-rope routes. Guided half-days typically include rope, harness, helmet, shoes and all hardware, so beginners need bring only comfortable clothing and water; independent climbers supply their own rack and quickdraws. Mountain guides based in Arco, accredited through the Collegio Guide Alpine, give a safety briefing covering belaying, anchors and communication, and on multi-pitch routes manage the ropework and retreat plan. Because some walls are large and committing, guides carry first aid and a phone, and serious incidents are handled by the national mountain rescue service (Soccorso Alpino) on 118. The prime seasons are spring and autumn, roughly March to May and September to November, when temperatures suit long days on the rock; the south-facing crags can be climbed even on mild winter days, while high summer is hot, so shaded walls and early or late sessions work best. Arco itself makes an ideal base with gear shops, a climbing gym and easy access to crags, and booking a guide ahead is wise during the busy spring and autumn periods.
